The Community Alcohol and Drug Services (CADS) Pregnancy and Parental Service (PPS) is a regional outreach multi-disciplinary team that provides consultation, brief intervention, intensive support, and care coordination.

Who We Are

The Community Alcohol and Drug Services (CADS) Pregnancy and Parental Service (PPS) is a regional, outreach multi-disciplinary team that provides consultation for health professionals, and brief intervention, intensive support, and care co-ordination for tāngata whai ora.

We support pregnant people and parents (with a child under three years at the time of referral) who are experiencing challenges with alcohol and/or other drugs, aiming to improve health outcomes for both parents and children.

PPS staff are able to meet clients at home or at other community locations, reducing barriers, such as transport, need for childcare and possible stigma.

Our Service

  • Community-based service (no residential beds)

Duration of Stay

  • Engagement varies from brief intervention to long-term intensive wrap-around support for up to a year or longer, as required.

What We Offer

  • Strength-based goal planning that focuses on resilience and wellbeing to improve outcomes for parents and children
  • Education and information on the effects of alcohol and other drug use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting with the aim of reducing the harm associated with substance use
  • Help to access health and social services in the perinatal period and provide parenting education and support
  • Whānau-inclusive support and family engagement
  • Coordination of health and social-service providers
  • Advocacy to support non-judgemental service access and reduce stigma
  • Multi-disciplinary team: psychiatrists, psychologists, AOD clinicians, nurses, social workers, peer-support specialists, and a Māori-focused clinician
