Peer Support Worker – Ember Puna Whakataa (John’s story)

Recovery to me is the process of overcoming personal addiction with the help of a community and gaining a new, full and rewarding life. Important in this is being available to support and receive support from those who are further ahead in the journey and those who are early in their journey.

I find Puna Whakataa a rewarding place to work as I listen to others and share my journey when it’s helpful.

*John* came into Puna Whakataa early in 2025 after detox. At this point he was struggling with sleep & anxiety. A self-sufficient man, he wanted to be in recovery for his whānau’s sake.

John mentioned to his PSW at Puna that during his second stay that Puna had worked where other options hadn’t. He’d come back after three months to learn more, consolidate his recovery and look towards the future. He was healthy and no longer suffering from acute anxiety and was supportive to other guests.

What I appreciate about Puna is it provides a safe space for people, no matter where they are in recovery. Recently we had a guest who struggled to communicate. One goal was to be able to reach out to others. On leaving Puna, he felt confident enough to engage in a recovery group and to reduce time on solitary activities. During their time here they stepped outside their comfort zone to participate in groups and games.

They achieved their goals in Puna Whakataa to make changes in activities and also in self-care by adding healthy activities.

It was a real joy to hear how well they were doing.
