Substance use and health impacts in Counties Manukau

In New Zealand around 12% of the population are estimated to experience a substance use disorder in their lifetime.  The potential harms that can emerge from substance use include physical health loss alongside social, emotional and financial harm. 

In 2016, the AOD Provider Collabroative commissioned the New Zealand Drug Foundation to prepare a snapshot of substance use and related health impacts to provide insights for health professionals working in Counties manukau.

 

The snapshot includes information about:

  • short term physical harms and longer term effects on physical and other wellbeing cause by substance use
  • protective factors
  • alcohol use in Counties Manukau
  • substances with the largest health impact in New Zealand (including reference to Counties Manukau)
  • estimates of the physical and social burden of harm.
